Photo Sessions

The Madrids // Family Session

My pile of good blogging intentions has been patiently sitting in the corner of my room since September, waiting to be dusted off. It's over there along with my organize the linen closet to-do list, and purge the kids' dressers sticky note. You know, all the things I could get done if time, energy, and willpower all somehow self-aligned? I don't foresee it all happening today, but I am finally sharing this family session from the fall, so that's a start!

My hands-down favorite place to photograph families is at home. I think it's easy to see why. Kids are usually most comfortable there, surrounded by familiarity and their favorite things. Parents are more relaxed because all they have to do is open the door when I knock, rather than load up and hope the kids stay happy and clean in the car. Don't get me wrong, I love pockets of woods and quaint neighborhood ice cream shops, too...they just don't come with quite the same kind of comfort and memories of home. For the Madrid family, these photographs will be a reminder of how Ben wouldn't walk down the stairs without holding dad's hand; mama will look at them and remember what it was like to rock her baby on that front porch chair. That's my hope.

Hank // Newborn Session

Ahhh. Newborn sessions. They're just one of my favorite things. I love the slow, hushed nature of them and I always leave thinking about those first days with my own babies. As my kids get older, I'm learning to enjoy each new stage, but gosh, it's hard not to miss when they were so little in my arms. I guess that's why I enjoy newborns so much; their little sounds and smells (yes, even the bad ones), the way they curl up and sleep so soundly. It just doesn't get much sweeter than that.

Our family is preparing to leave for a 19 day road trip starting in Nashville and ending in Boston. I'm so looking forward to time away exploring parts of the country we've never been before and spending time with good friends along the way. But, I wanted to share this session from a couple months ago before we set out. So, here is handsome little Hank.

Tallulah // Newborn Session

Because of my prolonged break from blogging, I have a heap of sessions to share from the past year-and-a-half. Pay no attention to the fact that this girl is now 16 months old, and instead focus on how sweet and tiny she used to be! A benefit of photographing the babes of friends is getting to watch them grow in real time. "Baby Tallulah" as my kids still call her, is becoming much less baby these days, and that newborn hair that looked brown is now full-on blonde.

Caroline // Five Years Old

The gift of friendship is one of life's greatest treasures.  Caroline's family are some of our nearest and dearest friends; our kids have grown up together and we don't intend on letting geographic distance interfere with even the youngest of friendships.  She is sassy and sweet, and we are so glad she gets to visit family in Houston so we can see her whenever she comes into town.

I have photographed Caroline for all five of her birthdays.  Last week, while her family was in town, we met outside the Heights library for this quick session before she headed back to Dallas. And thought it was not nearly a long enough visit, it was at least enough for her to be her in front of the camera.

Knox // One Year Old

This is our buddy Knox.  He turned one last week, just a few days before my baby girl.  Because of the cold and wet weather we've been having, we decided to use the same indoor location as Emelia's session {seen here}.  Turns out living in an apartment has it's perks when the resident lounge goes largely unused and has big windows and great old wooden flooring.

Here's Knox, and his serious outlook on turning one.

Holland // Newborn Session

This is a long overdue post of a session from October, 2014!  Little Holland is baby number five for this family and I've photographed all of them as newborns.  Their oldest was one of the very first newborn sessions I was ever asked to do, so in many ways they have helped shape my photographic endeavors.  It's fun to walk into their home and see a wall of photographs I've taken over the years and just how similar all five of them looked as newborns.  I'm so thankful for this sweet family and the gift of their friendship.

Brock // Newborn Session

Photographing newborns is one of my favorite things to do, and I don't think it should be a complicated matter.  The early days of bringing a baby home can become a whirlwind of diaper changes, feedings and shushing to sleep.  They are long and tiring and overwhelming and beautiful,  and they pass oh so quickly.  That's why simple and timeless images are always my goal during these at-home sessions.  Bare baby on a white blanket is quite simply the best.

Welcome, baby Brock.  You are one loved little man.

Emelia Quin // My Newborn and a Quick Update

The last several months have brought several changes for us, including a baby, a move, new job and new church.  We are delighted in all of these changes, but as seasons like this one tend to do, tasks like blogging fall far down the things-to-do list (as if I was great at keeping up with it in the first place).  But now that our new home is mostly put into order, kids are napping, and free time is making a slow comeback, I'm happy to sit down for a bit and share a quick update.

Emelia

In March, after a very quick yet very painful birth, Emelia Quin made her entrance into our lives. These pictures were taken a few days after she was born but she is now a very squishy five month old.  She receives approximately 1000 kisses a day and smiles after each one, and I'm trying to soak in her baby-ness as much as possible.  Eisley and Easton are both smitten as well, just as she seems to be with them.  Her sweet and gentle spirit are already so apparent, and we are so in love with this little one.

In other news..

In July, 2006, Brandon and I moved to Dallas not knowing we would call it home for eight years. All three of our babies were born there and countless friends-like-family made.  And yet, not long after Emelia was born, we began packing up the house we've lived in for the past five years and to the delight of our parents, siblings and extended family, recently moved back to Houston. Brandon is now the teaching pastor at Sojourn Heights, a church that has welcomed us back to the city so abundantly well and in our short time here has already become like family.  If you're in the area, please stop by and be welcomed in the same way.

Lastly, I will now be offering photo sessions in the Houston and surrounding areas as well as seasonal sessions in Dallas.  Please see the Upcoming Mini-Sessions page for details or contact me for future Dallas dates.

Smithson Lee // Newborn Session

This is Smithson Lee, quite possibly the most laid-back newborn I've ever photographed.  This post is an example of why I love lifestyle newborn sessions so much.  I love capturing the small things that happen in those first few days at home.  Mama is usually tired and soaking in the hands, feet and face of the one who's been in her tummy for months, and dad is usually still in awe of seeing his baby being held by the woman he loves.  It's a beautiful thing.  So here is little Smithson in his light-filled home, with his mama and daddy rejoicing over the sweet gift that he is.

It's a joy and privilege to be invited into someone's home for such a significant occasion; one that I never grow tired of partaking in.  My own baby girl is due in just three short weeks, so I'll be taking a bit of time off to adjust to life with 3 littles, but if you are interested in having your own lifestyle newborn session, I will be booking sessions again starting in late May.

Everett // Newborn Session

Another baby boy for some of our very best friends, this is Everett.  Doesn't he looks just like his daddy and brothers {see last image at the bottom}?  We love this sweet family so much and are so grateful to have good friends to raise our family with.  Welcome to the world, brave Everett!!

Titus // Newborn Session

Last week was a busy week for me, photographing 3 newbies.  Even though it's been a few months since my last blog post, I hope to share each of last week's baby boys with you.  First off, meet sweet little Titus.  He is the first of 8 close friends of mine that are having baby boys in the next few months, making our baby girl (due in 6 weeks) the solo girl of the bunch.  I always feel honored when friends ask me to photograph their little ones.  I was able to witness (and photograph) big brother Luke's birth, but didn't make it to the hospital quite quick enough for Titus.  But, since I just so happened to be visiting Houston when he was born, thankfully I was able to do a quick session for them before heading home.  What a joy.

Feel free to take a peek at brother Luke's newborn session here.

Bless you, sweet friends and your handsome baby boy.  Love you guys.

Maven // Newborn Session // Part 1

There is just too much of this beautiful girl to share, so instead of one giant post, I've decided to break it down into two parts.  Today, the lifestyle portion:

I just love her little sun-filled room and can't wait to see what adventures she will go on in the years to come.  More of Maven coming tomorrow...
